Abstract

The onset of axisymmetric convection in cylindrical layers of fluid heated from beneath is investigated for various radius-to-height ratios. Upper as well as lower bounds on the critical Rayleigh number for such flows are computed, and the structure of the convective flow is investigated. The latter is in good agreement with the observation of Koschmieder.
