Abstract
Abstract We show that thermal states for quantum systems with a finite number of energy levels are SU(N)-coherent states in the extended Hilbert space of thermo field dynamics. We derive a general method, valid for any system, for finding the thermal vacuum and the thermal operators. Explicit formulas are given for non-interacting particles of spin ½/, 1 and 3/2 in a constant magnetic field.
