Abstract

It is shown that an electrostatically shielded, space-charge limited thermionic diode can be operated so as to produce excited atomic states by the Frank-Hertz effect in the nearly field-free region probed by a light beam. This technique has been applied to Cs to determine the ratios of the oscillator strengths of the 75→ nP fine structure components with n=13 to 21. The measured values are in good agreement with model potential calculations.
