Abstract

Abstract From an investigation of the activation energy of flow in neutron irradiated copper it appears that the activation enthalpy is not linear with temperature at constant strain rate. This observation is in apparent contradiction with the results of an investigation of the temperature dependence of the activation enthalpy at constant effective stress, in which it was found that the activation enthalpy was independent of temperature. This apparent contradiction is explained in terms of thermally activated dislocation motion in a periodic internal stress field.
