Abstract

The linear thermal expansion of a number of non-oriented amorphous polymers (PMMA, PS, PVA, and elastonite) is measured at 173–373 K by a general (macroscopic) dilatometric method, and also by a microscopic method at the molecular level, i.e. large angle X-ray diffraction, from the angular displacement of a halo (microscopic expansion). The microscopic expansion is several orders of magnitude greater than the macroscopic expansion.
