Abstract

A study of the thermal etching of lithium fluoride showed that, under certain conditions of temperature, pressure, and time, thermal etch pits can be produced at dislocation sites on the surface of lithium flouride. The dependence of the pits on these conditions and pit development are correlated with the theory of crystal dissolution. The thermal etch pits at dislocation sites were compared with chemical etch pits formed at dislocation sites in lithium fluoride.
