Abstract
We discuss the properties of the non-thermal SZ effect in galaxy clusters in comparison with the well know thermal SZ effect. Following a generalized approach to the derivation of the SZ effect, we show that it is possible to set interesting constraints to the presence and to the physical properties of additional populations of electrons (both of non-thermal and thermal origin) residing in the atmospheres of galaxy clusters.
