Abstract

Abstract Automated thermal analysis has been used to determine the liquidus and to characterize the reactions in the Ag–Au–Sn ternary system at tin contents from 20 to 100 wt.-%. A quasi-binary eutectic occurs at 370° C between AuSn and ζ. Four invariant reactions were identified: a ternary quasi-peritectic reaction, liquid + ζ ⇌ ɛ + AuSn, at 351° C; a second ternary quasi-peritectic reaction, liquid + AuSn ⇌ ɛ + AuSn2 at 294° C; a third ternary quasi-peritectic reaction, liquid + AuSn2 ⇌ ɛ + AuSn4 at 240° C; and a ternary eutectic reaction, liquid ⇌ ɛ + Sn + AuSn4 at 206° C.
