Abstract
A simple alloy-analogy model for inhomogeneous semiconducting mixed-valence compounds is extended to include the coupling of the long-range charge-order order parameter to the lattice. For weak coupling to the lattice the order-disorder transition is of second order, while it is of first order in the case of strong phonon coupling. We calculate the entropy, the conductivity, and the thermal dilation close to the transition and discuss the results in view of recent experiments for ${\mathrm{Eu}}_{3}$${\mathrm{S}}_{4}$.
