Abstract

*The effect of high back pressure on jet liquid atomization in quiescent air has been studied. Theoretical explanations on spray characteristics of plain jet liquid atomization with positive pressure index, were presented. A detailed calculation on the jet velocity at the end of intact length was performed, the results showed that with constant injection velocity, with high back pressure, the jet velocity at the end of intact length was lower for higher back pressure than that with lower back pressure. Also the liquid jet break-up and decay of aerodynamic force for atomization were studied. A detailed analysis was provided which showed clearly that a common statement in plain jet atomization literature that the aerodynamic force for jet atomization will increase with pressure, actually is not always correct. For understanding plain jet liquid atomization characteristics, the jet velocity decay in intact length period, decrease of filament velocity and decrease of aerodynamic force for final atomization, which are related to a higher back pressure, shall all be considered.
