Abstract

A multi-stage purification process is examined which utilizes fractional solidification in a way related to that employed in zone melting. The principle of the technique, for which the term cascade purification is suggested, has been previously outlined, but the quantitative analysis presented in this paper is original. The process exhibits certain theoretical advantages when compared with zone melting. These might be exploited most efficiently for high volume production involving relatively small purification factors. There is reason to believe that the technique could be applied to metals, for which many previously-suggested continuous zone melting processes are not suitable. A later paper will examine experimental application of the technique.
