William Jones and Norman H March Chichester: J Wiley 1973 pp (Vol 1) xvi + 680, (Vol 2) xv + 681–1301 price $39.5O each Solid state physics has grown to such a degree that it takes both courage and perseverance to write a book covering a large part of the subject; but such books are necessary, for only a systematic presentation by one or two authors can hope to bring out the relations between different areas and to give the proper survey of the subject which is missed in even the best specialist reviews. The authors have chosen a pedagogical approach, including problems and relatively few references to research papers, and preferring to prove results rather than to merely indicate them.
