Theoretical calculus of the mechanical strength of binary oxide glasses

Abstract

The mechanical strength of the glasses is determined by the strength of the established bonds between the different macro-anionic species, these bonds being the weaker compared to the covalent ones inside the macro-anionic species. In this paper is proposed a probabilistic relationship to calculate the theoretical mechanical strength of the SiO2 glass and of some compositions in the Na2O⋅Si2 system, in good agreement with literature data.
