Abstract

The theory of image formation in optical instruments in partially coherent illumination is applied to calculate the luminance distribution in the image of an opaque straight-edge; experimental and theoretical results are compared. The first and the second derivative of luminance with respect to distance are given. The extension of the method to include edges with contrast less than one, finite gratings and any staircase-like objects is outlined.
