Abstract
Metal chelates of N,N′-disubstituted dithiooxamide were investigated for their potential as grease thickeners. It was found that three selected materials did thicken fluids to grease consistencies. The three materials were: N,N′-dimethyldithiooxamido cobalt (N,N′-DMDTO Co), N,N′-dimethyl dithiooxamido zinc (N,N′-DMDTO Zn), and dithiooxanilino zinc (DTOA Zn). The dithiooxamides have been found to be an excellent new class of thickeners. They demonstrate high thermal and oxidative stability and are efficient thickeners for a wide variety of synthetic fluids. It is shown that a two-component grease system can be prepared from them and will function as an extreme-pressure, antiwear grease without the introduction of other additives.
