Abstract

Abstract The model theory of piezo-and pyroelectricity of poly(vinylidene fluoride) developed by Wada and Hayakawa [Ferroelectrics 32, 115(1981)] is applied to predict the temperature dependence of piezoelectric constant e 31, its imaginary part e 31″ and pyroelectric constant p 3. Under some reasonable assumptions, a good agreement with experiment is found for e 31 in a wide temperature range from -130° to 100°C. The observed behavior of e 31″ from -25° to 100°C is roughly predicted by the theory under the same assumptions as for e 31. The theory reproduces observed values of p 3 from -80° to 40°C except the transition region just above the glass transition temperature.
