Abstract

A structure of multimode-three-core-multimode (MTM) fiber for low-frequency vibration detection is proposed. Firstly, the sensing principle and simulation aiming curvature characteristic and spectral quality are revealed. Next, the sensing mechanism is demonstrated by home-made vibration generating device, which is composed of electromagnetic coils and equal-strength cantilever beam. Experimental results show that in the range of 1–20 Hz, MTM fiber structure based vibration sensor is able to get an accurate frequency within the relative error of 2.20%. The proposed sensor is low-cost and easy to be fabricated, which has potential applications on the long-term monitoring of constructions and mechanical structures.
