Abstract

THE BEST PLACE to begin a study of Theopompus' treatment of Philip is with the long discussion found in Polybius (T 19).' Apart from the extensive treatise by Dionysius of Halicarnassus, which Professor Walbank considers a refutation of Polybius,2 it is the longest piece of descriptive criticism of the Philippica that we have. Indeed, the whole passage is much too long to cite. So a summary with a few key observations will have to suffice.
