In an early schematic outline to the Trauerspiel-book under a theory of tragedy heading, Benjamin singularly criticizes Nietzsche's failure to recognize the central role of language and judicial process in his work on tragedy.4 Like Nietzsche, if for different reasons, Benjamin also objects to traditional theories of tragedy.
