Abstract
This article examines Henrik Ibsen’s relationship with Christianity during his childhood and youth, focusing on the period before his 1850 debut. It challenges previous interpretations based solely on literary analysis, instead grounding its approach in historical sources and the societal context of 19th-century Norway. The study aims to provide a more nuanced understanding of the young Ibsen’s relationship with Christianity, considering both conformity and dissent.
