Abstract
This article studies the hostilities that existed within the labour movement in Igualada, an industrial town in Catalonia, during the Spanish Second Republic. After establishing the historical predominance of the anarcho-syndicalist Confederación Nacional del Trabajo (CNT) and its forerunners in the town, the article goes on to examine the attempts of local CNT militants both to increase the CNT's membership base and to prevent the establishment of other labour organizations, especially the CNT's longstanding socialist rival, the Unión General de Trabajadores (UGT), in the context of the anarcho-syndicalist movement suffering a significant decline between approximately 1932 and 1935. The article highlights the extent to which the local workers' movement was riven with sectarian hostilities that manifested themselves in the form of propaganda attacks, boycotts and even violence throughout the entire pre-Civil War period of the Second Republic, including during the months immediately preceding the outbreak of war.
