Abstract

This article is concerned with the use of the word kejdn ('nature') in the vocabulary of Aphraates. Aphraates is known as the author of 23 so-called Demonstrations written in Syriac. They are composed during the years 337-345.1 This means that Aphraates was living during the period of the christological controversies. Nothing of it, however, is to be found in his writings. His work is confined to questions and problems related with the church in his own district, viz. the Syriac speaking part of Persia. He shows a remarkably good knowledge of the Old and New Testament and betrays some knowledge of the Jewish haggada.2 It is, of course, interesting to know in which way an author obviously little influenced by Western theology is using a thoroughly Greek idea like 'nature'.
