Abstract

Recent ecological studies of the shallow water fish community in the Azores revealed that a single flatfish species, Bothus podas, is present over a wide range of habitats and substrata. Elswhere in European waters these habitats are utilised by a variety of flatfish species. Little is known about Bothus podas aside from its initial descriptions. The new year class (30–60 mm) is present in shallow water for a very short period (from July to September with maximum catches in August). Length-frequency histograms indicate at least two older groups (70–100 mm, 120–160 mm) present from July to September. During diving surveys the only B. podas recorded on rocky substrata were from these larger length classes. Adult B. podas is sexually dimorphic, the distance between the eyes is greater in adult males than in females. Basic information is presented on species biology, diet, and habitat preference.
