Abstract

This paper is a substantially re-worked version of an illustrated lecture presented in London on March 20th 1986 before the British Academy, the British School of Archaeology in Jerusalem and the Palestine Exploration Fund. It is now dedicated to Crystal Bennett in appreciation of her many acts of kindness when she was director of the British School in Jerusalem and, later, of the British Institute at Amman for Archaeology and History and, particularly, for the happy memories we share of our work together in the excavations of Jerusalem.
