Abstract

The hypertext is one of the parameters employed to analyze the maturity of digital journalism. Few studies have focused on the use of links by news sites, and even less research delve into the types of links according to their semantic component. For fill in this gap, we conducted a comparative study of Colombian and Spanish online newspapers to determine the amount (number of links per unit of content) and quality (link types based on their semantic implications) of the use of hypertext. We measure content units posted on the front page of each online newspaper, the number of links on the total content units, and the number of contextual, relational and recommended links. We observe a greater use of hypertext in Spanish newspapers that in Colombian ones, and in general, a prevalence of superficial links.
