Abstract

The co-authors, partners in a library space-planning and architectural firm, explain how they have changed their practices to meet the need for future-oriented libraries. They contend that public library builders-both clients and architects-must design their new libraries for constant change, with book storage replaced by more and more people-gathering and -use functions. The authors recommend a turn toward photographic studies and discussions with library users and influentials to define the design possibilities for a flexible library future. The authors use several conceptual and process drawings to illustrate their planning concepts.
