Robert van der Veen and Philippe Van Parijs argue that the introduction and expansion of universal grants within capitalism will enable us to bypass socialism and move directly towards our true goal, i.e., communism. Nevertheless I disagree both with their view of the ideal we should pursue and with their analysis of the role that universal grants could play in a capitalist system. Some form of socialism with all its limitations, ambiguities, and contradictions offers the best course for the future.1 The internal logic of capitalism'makes the transformation they seek impossible.
