Abstract
Your report on the Vinland map (Physics Bulletin January 1975 p11) gives the impression that only physical and chemical examination could prove that it is a forgery and that historians had no other evidence of this. This is a somewhat partisan attitude, and in fact it was doubts of the map's authenticity on historical and literary grounds that led to the examination by McCrone.
