Abstract

In every mammal, with the exception of the monotremes, it is possible to identify at least three cellular components of the ventral nuclear group: the ventral lateral, ventral medial, and ventral posterior nuclei. In many species a ventral anterior nucleus can be distinguished as well and, in higher primates, the ventral lateral nucleus is clearly divided into at least two subnuclei. A ventral posterior inferior nucleus is also commonly identified.
