Abstract

In this essay, I present a case study of drama as pedagogy via the work of labor drama instructor Hazel MacKaye, a former radical suffragist who pioneered activist pageantry, at Brookwood Labor College from 1925 to 1926. My analysis of archival documents associated with MacKaye’s dramatics program at Brookwood both highlights relationships between U.S.-based educational drama and left-leaning theatre practices before the New Deal and complements extant historical investigations of U.S. theatre for youth in the early twentieth century. This article is a selection from a project that received the 2014 Distinguished Dissertation Award from the American Alliance for Theatre and Education.
