Abstract

The integration of Midwifery Education into Higher Education in the UK was completed in 1996. Since this transition, Salvoni (2001) states that concerns have been raised regarding the usefulness of theoretical knowledge in practice. This research aimed to explore seven senior lecturers’ perceptions of the value of clinical practice as midwifery educationalists based in a Higher Education setting. A phenomenological approach was adopted with information being obtained through a focus group interview. The findings indicated that a transition process occurred as the Senior Lecturers withdrew from clinical practice similar to feelings of loss. Those Senior Lecturers involved in clinical practice perceived it to be valuable in terms of informing teaching activities and increasing confidence as opposed to those not directly involved. Future research is recommended to elicit the perceptions of other midwifery lecturers in the United Kingdom. This may impact upon the future provision of midwifery education.
