Abstract

The debate over the merits of screening for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) continues to generate a large amount of literature—usually controversial, often confusing, and occasionally confused. By focusing almost exclusively on the technical and physiologic difficulties associated with early detection, these discussions tend to ignore more fundamental considerations.
