Abstract

The synthetic organophosphonates 3-aminopropylphosphonic acid and 4-aminobutylphosphonic acid were utilized as sole nitrogen sources by an environmental bacterial isolate by a previously unreported pathway which did not involve cleavage of the carbon-phosphorus bond. The organism also appeared to possess a novel organophosphenate uptake system which was independent of the phosphate status of the cell.
