Abstract

The rush toward digital transformation across all industries has accelerated as the Covid‐19 pandemic forced new ways of interacting with customers, employees, and vendors. Damaging storms in the United States, the rapid addition of renewable energy resources, and customers’ desire for new functionalities to interact with their energy providers are compounding this push. Utilities are recognizing the age and vulnerabilities of their systems to manage assets remotely, support a mobile workforce, and build a self‐healing electric grid. Meeting these objectives requires a coordinated and purposeful effort with commitment from leaders to transition utility operations to a modern digital platform. There have been isolated pockets of digital projects and workarounds, though these are inadequate for utilities to design, build, and provide the experiences customers and regulators are demanding. With the appropriate digital transformation framework, utilities can deliver the products needed for their workforce and meet the expectations of their customers.
