Abstract

The study of small particle shape and structure is facilitated considerably by supporting the small metal particles on nonporous substrates. This permits an examination of the three-dimensional shape from various aspects, along the support surface and perpendicular to it. Profile views of the metal particle make it possible to study the metal surface and the metal-oxide interface using high resolution TEM. A significant improvement in contrast and visibility of small particles results from the absence of any background from the support in the profile views. Examples are presented of HRTEM images of ruthenium and rhodium small particles supported on oxide surfaces.
