Abstract

ABSTRACT A numerical model was developed using the Abaqus software to investigate the behaviour of energy piles located in a group of structural piles. A new element has been added to the input file of the software to perform coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical analysis. The modified version was verified by modelling different coupled problems. It is introduced herein as a new method with which to analyse groups of energy piles with different geometries without head restraints. The pile length, diameter, spacing and number of piles in each group were considered as variables of analysis. Temperature cycles were applied to the energy piles over a span of 2 years. The interaction factor (IF) was used to investigate the effect of the energy piles on the settlement of adjacent structural piles. The changes in IF relative to the geometric variables were studied and a new formulation has been proposed for its calculation. Analysis showed that the interaction factor increased significantly in the heating phase compared to the cooling phase. The coefficient also increased with an increase in the number of piles in the group. In the heating phase, however, the interaction factor decreased with an increase in the distance between the piles and in the pile length.
