Abstract

The male reproductive tissue in Z. mays, from anther and pollen development to pollen germination, has been well characterized at the plant and cell level (Bonnett, 1948; Weatherwax, 1955; Cheng, Greyson and Waldon, 1979). In addition, biochemical studies describing the enzymes contained in mature pollen grains are abundant (see Miller, 1982). Recently, the developmental programs that underlie anther differentiation (Abbott, Ainsworth and Flavell, 1984) and pollen germination (Mascarenhas et al., 1984) have begun to yield to molecular investigation.
