Abstract

ABSTRACT Intensive cultivation of sangkuriang catfish (Clarias gariepinus) has the potential to increase toxic inorganic compounds. Biofloc is one way to offset the negative impact of the large amount of ammonia being converted into floc by utilizing heterotrophic bacteria with the addition of a carbon source. This study analyzes the effect of carbon type on water quality and growth performance of sangkuriang catfish. Used a completely randomized design with three treatments and three replications: probiotics + molasses, probiotics + wheat flour, and probiotics + sugar. The results of the research show that wheat flour and sugar could substitute molasses carbon as seen from the results of the carbon content tested which shows high values for wheat flour (46.16%), sugar (43.65%), and molasses (23.16%). Water quality and growth performance of sangkuriang catfish were not significantly different (p > 0 .05). The addition of carbon sources had a positive effect on ammonia, nitrite, total intestinal bacteria, and floc volume (p < 0 .05).
