Abstract

A compulsive gambler was treated using several behavior modification techniques. Positive reinforcement and family contingency contracting were used in an effort to increase more appropriate and desirable behaviors; whereas faradic shock, massed practice, protracted time-out periods from wife, and covert sensitization were used to eliminate gambling behaviors. At the time therapy was first terminated (after 16 sessions), gambling behaviors had stopped, the marital situation had improved, and personality assessment measures (given before and after therapy) showed impressive improvements. However a later relapse by the patient made it necessary to look at “follow-up” and “booster” sessions more closely as an integral part of the overall therapy program.
