Abstract
This article traces the role of the US in Northern Ireland, from the 1970s onwards. By examining the role of various US administrations, as well as the evolution of the peace process and the British–Irish relationship, it is concluded that the US, although important, was not a causal factor in the peace process. Intervention is defined in the first part of the article and US administrations from President Carter to President Obama are examined so as to determine their role in Northern Ireland.
