Abstract
The peace process in Northern Ireland was carefully monitored at the highest EU level by the three main institutions of the European Union, the European Parliament, the Council of Ministers and the Commission. In order to underpin the peace process, the European Union raised its contribution to the International Fund for Ireland, provided aid through the Structural Funds, and launched a special support Programme for Peace and Reconciliation in Northern Ireland and the border counties. Gerard Collins, TD, MEP and former Irish minister for Foreign Affairs describes in this article how the European institutions play their role in the peace and reconciliation process on the island of Ireland.
