Abstract

This articles weighs the impact of the United Nations embargoes, especially those on armaments acquisition placed on the Republic of South Africa in the late 1970s, and analyses the resultant growth in a local armaments industry, its effect upon the performance and capabilities of the South African Defence Force, and the economic, social, and political factors that combined to help bring about the end of apartheid in that country in 1994.
