Abstract

This article explores the possibility of Taiwan officially joining the American system of extended nuclear deterrence. Examining the evolution of U.S. policy towards the Taiwan issue, the author analyzes the current political and academic debate regarding the use of a “nuclear umbrella” to protect Taiwan, the implications of such a step for the U.S. interests in Asia, and makes a conclusion about the possibility of such a scenario being realized.
