Abstract

Election promises made by Joe Biden's team have raised hopes of a US return to the Iran nuclear deal. The article evaluates the initial parameters of a possible resumption of US participation in the nuclear agreement, analyzes the evolution of Biden's approaches to their implementation and examines the reaction of the Iranian side. The key factors that contributed to the change in US policy towards the previous strategy of coercion and pressure on Iran are identified. It concludes that the delay in the start of negotiations and the desire to renegotiate the original nuclear agreement by putting forward additional restrictions on Iran, along with the Biden administration's failure to ease sanctions, were the main reasons for the failure of the negotiations. The Biden administration currently does not have a clear policy regarding Iran and its nuclear program.
