Abstract

QUESTIONS RAISED in the paper were: Musical form, requiring as it does, a lapse of time for its realization, can be the subject of discussion only if it can be described by some means at one instant of time. Such a medium could be numbers, e.g., the numbers we use in referring to types of chords, or some system such as Birkhoff attempted in his Aesthetic Measure. The question is--which medium will most completely and accurately convey the essentials of the art to be investigated? A second decision which must be made is the purpose for which the analysis is being done. Is it to be a basis for further investigation; is it to be evidence to prove a certain hypothesis; or is it to be used as a basis of comparison with existing knowledge? Finally, what is the place of any analytical approach to an art?
