Abstract

I read with sadness Robert Heilbroner's article, The Triumph of Capitalism in the January 23, 1989, New Yorker in which he espoused a new, major theme of right-wing ideology in this country. Many others have joined his triumphal celebration of capitalism and funeral possession for socialism. By joining this clique, Heilbroner has abandoned a lifetime of distinguished work; The Triumph of Capitalism is inconsistent with Heilbroner's own extensive writings on the nature and dynamics of capitalism and its relationship to socialism. This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the Monthly Review website.
