Abstract

That personal time may include travel. Travelling in Canada during the winter months can be hazardous, as we all know, but fortunately nowadays it is far more likely to be tedious and time-consuming, rather than hazardous. Travel by road means that, to a large extent, we determine our own fate: a winter blizzard means that we stay off the roads and go when it has passed. But if our travel is by air, then we are part of a complex system, and adverse conditions can mean that our ability to travel is very much out of our hands. A flight cancellation can require multiple subsequent arrangements and the possibility of being stranded far from home. Airlines will do their best in such circumstances, and I have great sympathy for the hapless airline staff who must deal with the frustration of stranded travellers; but in virtually every case, fate and the weather have the last word. Throw in a medical complication, and inconvenience can very quickly become a nightmare.
