Abstract

SUMMARY This article describes a transition group developed for inner city residents receiving inpatient alcoholism rehabilitation in a hospital-based alcoholism facility. The goal of the group was to facilitate clients' transition from inpatient to outpatient alcoholism treatment. First, the paper will suggest reasons why clients do not continue in care, and it will review prior efforts to help people connect with continuing outpatient treatment. Then, the theoretical framework that guided the group's design will be described. Next, it will outline the intervention's components. Finally, it will discuss the group's effectiveness and implications for clinical practice with adults who experience alcohol problems.
