Abstract

The increasing demand of people for information affects all areas of society, and leads to the emergence of new information and communication technologies. Production and dissemination of knowledge becomes the main social activity, and this resulted in coining the new term «knowledge society». Another trait of modern society is the growing role of Applied Sciences. The paper covers the following issues: · the correlation of the concepts of «information society» and «knowledge society»; · the definition of Applied Sciences, and their specific features; · the main trends in the development of fundamental and applied knowledge in the «knowledge society»; · the conditions that contribute to an imbalance in the development of fundamental and applied science in modern society; · the reasons for the growth of applied knowledge and its role in the development of science and society in general; · modification of the concept of truth caused by a change in the correlation of fundamental and applied science in modern society. Objective: identifying the reasons for a change in the correlation of fundamental and applied science in the modern «knowledge society». Method or methodology used: analysis, synthesis. Outcomes: A modern society can be defined as a «knowledge society». Applied Sciences are interdisciplinary. The purpose of Applied Sciences is increasing the technological capacity of society.
