Abstract The transfer of radiation by a plane-parallel atmosphere containing a uniform distribution of emission sources is considered for two cases: (a) isotropic scattering with an albedo iro, (b) scattering according to the asymmetric phase function iro(1 + x cos 0). The exact expressions for the emergent intensity are derived for both semi-infinite and finite atmospheres. For case (a) we obtain i(o, ~) = - 2E LX(~) - 2 iro(ao - Po) where E is the constant source function for the emitters, and a~ and ~o are respectively the zero moments of the X and Y functions. The X and Y functions are defined with respect to the characteristic function ~ = iro!2. For case (b) the same form is obtained for the solution; however the X and Y functions are defined with respect to the characteristic function = -El +x(I - iro)~~. 2 It is also shown how the exact intensity at any optical depth may be obtained.
